description In order to provide optical data for a better definition of the lower metallicity limit of the galactic globular cluster system, an observational program has been initiated which consists in studying the chemical composition of extremely metal-poor globular clusters. In the present study, results obtained from DDO and Washington photometry of red giants in M30 (NGC 7099) and M68 (NGC 4590) are presented. The abundances estimated ([M/H]ₘ₃₀ ≤ -2.4 and [M/H]ₘ₈₈ ≃ -2.6) place thee objects as the most metal poor among the globular clusters known in our Galaxy. These results suggest that the lower metallicity limit of the galactic globular cluster system can easily exceed the traditionally accepted limit. Interesting consequences related with the formation of the globular clusters in our Galaxy are analysed and discussed.
