Structure of the High Andes of San Juan

The stratigraphy and structure of the Teatinos-Mercedario rivers region is presented. The area is situated in the High Andes of San Juan, Argentina, between 31°55′ and 32°20′ along the border with Chile. The complex structure of this area is the result of the Tertiary tectonic inversion of Triassic...

The area is situated in the High Andes of San Juan, Argentina, between 31°55′ and 32°20′ along the border with Chile. The complex structure of this area is the result of the Tertiary tectonic inversion of Triassic normal faults. The Andean deformation began with structures detached in the gypsum of the Auquilco Formation typical of a thin-skinned fold and thrust belt. Later, the basement is involved by tectonic inversion of the normal faults producing a thick-skinned fold and thrust belt. The deformation of the basement with high angle reverse faults at the Ramada Massif, produced a sticking point in the foreland propagation of the thrust belt. This is responsible for the out-of-sequence-thrusts developed in the western areas. All the structures are older than 9.2 Ma. -from English summary Fil:Cristallini, E.O. Universidad de Buenos Aires.
