In the present work the scientific contributions related to the foraminiferal associations which prevailed during the Neogene in the South Atlantic Ocean made by several authors are synthesized. Several South American and African sedimentary basins in which Neogene deposits are registered are analyzed and the diagnostic taxa are listed. The Miocene South American and West African benthonic assemblages show little features in common; the South American benthonic Foraminifera are approximately comparable to those of the present Atlantic Province whereas the African assemblages show a marked endemism. Miocene planktonic Foraminifera are comparable in both continents. According to the records obtained up to the present, post Miocene South American deposits contain microfaunas more similar to each other than to those living today at the same latitudes; the West African microfaunas, on the other hand, do not exhibit the marked endemism of older epochs. © 1977, Elsevier Science & Technology.
