Sumario:A study of the influence of the lectin Concanavalin A (Con A) on the development of Bufo arenarum was carried out. Two effects were observed: one on the embryo (growth inhibition and malformations appearance), and the other one, on the membrane covering the embryo (hatching inhibition). A direct action on the embryo seems to be discarded, because Con A does not cross the fertilization membrane, and -methyl mannoside reverses the effect very fast. Very probably the lectin recognizes and blocks glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) present on the fertilization membrane. The indol-HCl method for GAGs recognition was applied to an extract of membranes and results have shown that hyaluronic acid is probably involved in the observed effects.
