A direct action on the embryo seems to be discarded, because Con A does not cross the fertilization membrane, and -methyl mannoside reverses the effect very fast. Very probably the lectin recognizes and blocks glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) present on the fertilization membrane. The indol-HCl method for GAGs recognition was applied to an extract of membranes and results have shown that hyaluronic acid is probably involved in the observed effects. Fil:Recondo, E.F.
