Effects of chromosome rearrangements on sperm formation in Sinipta dalmani (Orthoptera: Acrididae)

The populations of National Park «El Palmar» (Entre Rios Province, Argentina) of Sinipta dalmani are polymorphic for a pericentric inversion and a centric fusion (REMIS 1989b, 1990). The percentage of normal and abnormal (macro and micro) spermatids was asessed in order to evaluate the influence of...

The percentage of normal and abnormal (macro and micro) spermatids was asessed in order to evaluate the influence of these rearrangements on sperm formation. The pericentric inversion does not associate significantly with macrospermatid formation. On the contrary, microspermatid production and a significant increase in the frequency of macrospermatids are observed in centric fusion carriers. The DNA content of giant spermatids was mainly 2c, suggesting that there may be any meiotic misbehaviour during meiosis. However, 3c to 5c macrospermatids were also found; hence, other mechanism, such as cell fusion, may be involved in the production of abnormal sperm. Although this influence may affect any component of fitness in a negative way, it ought to be counterbalanced by any adaptive effect or else by meiotic drive in order to explain the maintenance of the centric fusion in natural populations. © 1993 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
