Stratigraphy and sedimentology of the ordovician units of the central section of the mojotoro range, eastern cordillera, northwest Argentina
This work shows the sedimentological study of the rocks that form the San Bernardo, 20 de Febrero and Vélez hills that emerge on the eastern border of the city of Salta (Argentina) and constitute the central sector of the Mojotoro range. In the succession analyzed, the Pedrera, Floresta, Áspero, San...

Mojotoro Range Ordovician Paleoenvironmental Santa Victoria Group victoria group This work shows the sedimentological study of the rocks that form the San Bernardo, 20 de Febrero and Vélez hills that emerge on the eastern border of the city of Salta (Argentina) and constitute the central sector of the Mojotoro range. In the succession analyzed, the Pedrera, Floresta, Áspero, San Bernardo and Mojotoro Formations were recognized, gathered in the Santa Victoria Group deposited from the Furongian to the Sandbian (Early Ordovician). This paper also describes the geology and stratigraphy of the study area, represented for the first time in a geological map of detail and mention is made of the economic importance of each recognized stratigraphic unit. In the analyzed sediments ten lithofacies were recognized and grouped into five facies associations that are representative of fluvial-coastal environments and of a marine platform dominated by storms, namely: I-fluvial systems, II-upper shoreface, III-offshore, IV-transition offshore. The fifth association is interpreted as gravitational phenomena that happened on the platform. Based on the analysis and the relationship between facies associations, sedimentation is interpreted from coastal environments that prograde a marine platform with higher energy events. © 2018, Asociacion Geologica Argentina.
