Geology and structural setting of the paramillos de uspallata polymetallic veins mendoza, Argentina

The Paramillos de Uspallata ore is composed of 33-polimetalic veins emplaced in the Triassic Uspallata Group, which consist of sedimentary and volcaniclastic rocks interbedded with alkaline basalts and Miocene andesitic rocks. The structure of the area comprise at least three orders of structures de...

The structure of the area comprise at least three orders of structures developed during Triassic extension of the Cuyo basin and the shortening of Cenozoic Andean orogeny, including high angle reverse faults, thrust and strike-slip faults. The veins were included in the third order, presenting NW, WNW and minor WSW trending. We analyzed the Triassic and Neogene structuration and geodynamic context. We carried out structural and petro-mineralogical analysis in eight veins of the deposit in order to get an approximation to their origin. The results show that the veins were emplaced in dilatant fractures with normal and strike slip displacement, which are associated to a first order cortical scale structure. The kinematic analyses shows a tension direction at 060° strike during the mineralization, which could be assigned to Triassic regional extensional regimen. © 2017, Asociacion Geologica Argentina.
