The tertiary units of the Rodeo-Iglesia Basin: Validity and correlation of the formational units

The Tertiary units of the Rodeo-Iglesia Basin: validity and correlation of the formational units. The Rodeo-Iglesia Basin, of north-west Argentina (San Juan province), consists of a narrow belt of thick Neogene sediments related to the Andean Orogeny. Although at least two different stratigraphical...

The Rodeo-Iglesia Basin, of north-west Argentina (San Juan province), consists of a narrow belt of thick Neogene sediments related to the Andean Orogeny. Although at least two different stratigraphical schemes have been proposed for this sequence, the stratigraphy was not thoroughly resolved. Two schemes were proposed simultaneously: 1) the Lomas del Campanario and Las Flores formations included within the Iglesia Group, and 2) Rodco Formation embracing all the Tertiary strata in the basin. Outcrops at Cuesta del Viento and Lomas del Campanario were examined in the present study and five sections were recognised. Section 1 is composed of massive breccia deposited in talus and small alluvial fans, section 2 of fine tuff, mudstone, volcanic breccia and ignimbrite points to volcanic activity in the area, section 3 consists of cross-bedded medium and fine sandstone and fine conglomerate deposited in fluvial environment, section 4 is formed by thick sequences of mudstone and fine sandstone with thin levels of marl, and finally section 5 is a complex of lithologics including levels of conglomerate, sandstone, mudstone and evaporitic (gypsum) beds deposited in fluvial and lacustrine environments. Regional correlation of the mentioned sections allows us to extend the name of Rodeo Formation to the whole Neogene sequence of the Rodeo-Iglesia Basin.
