Transpressive reactivation of the Triassic faulting during the tectonic inversion of the Guyana Basin
Deformed Triassic formations in the Guyana Basin contain evidence of a structural inheritance that indicate a tectonic control of continental sedimentation by extensional faulting, and later compressive reactivation during the Andean Orogeny. In Potrerillos (Mendoza Province) and the surrounding area, both extensional and compressive tectonic signatures are preserved. The former is recognized by means of stratigraphical and structural relationships in outcrops of Triassic formations (Las Cabras, Potrerillos, Cacheuta and Rio Blanco Formations), whereas the latter is mainly expressed in north trending concentric folding and northeast oriented dextral wrench faulting. A similar structural style and rocks in the subsurface wrench faulting kinematics of compressive Andean type were also mapped, more than twenty years ago, in deformed Triassic rocks in the subsurface of Alvear (Mendoza Province) about 220 km southeast of Potrerillos in the southern sector of the Guyana Basin. A regional tectonic framework controls the compressive structure and kinematics of the Triassic rocks in both places. There was a sinistral northwest shear zone, active between Maastrichtian-Paleocene to Oligocène times, parallel to the main longitudinal axis of the Guyana Basin, which formed a mayor crustal discontinuity in the foreland area during the Andean reactivation. From these observations and regional tectonic knowledge, it is suggested an active transpressive mechanism of shear zone extended over the entire Triassic Guyana Basin during the Cenozoic. It was controlled, to varying degrees in different places during the Andean tectonic inversion of sedimentary sequences, affected by earlier extension faulting and ancient pre-Triassic basement lineaments. © 1998 Asociacidn Geoldgica Argentina.
