Palynology from the Upper Carboniferous Itararé Subgroup at Itaporanga, Paraná Basin, São Paulo State, Brazil. Part two: Pollen systematics and palaeoenvironmental and stratigraphic significance

Systematic descriptions of 25 pollen grains from four core levels of the IG-01 borehole are presented to complete the whole assemblage with those described in part one. This section belongs to the middle-upper part of the Itararé Subgroup. The species included herein comprise: seventeen monosaccate...

This section belongs to the middle-upper part of the Itararé Subgroup. The species included herein comprise: seventeen monosaccate pollen (one striate), six bisaccate pollen (two striate), one praecolpate pollen and one colpate. Circumplicatipollis plicatus Ottone and Azcuy is identified for the first time in the Paraná Basin. Previous paleontological information from this well including marine bivalves and brachiopods, is taken into account together with the palynological composition, botanical affinities, palynofacies and lithology, and a hypothesis of the palaeoenvironment / paleoclimatic conditions of depocentre is proposed. Initial estuarine conditions are registered at the 76 m level. A restricted coastal lagoon with a seasonal temperate climate corresponds to the 54 m level. The last episode, interpreted as a low energy and normal salinity shelf setting, is recognized at the 37 m and 36,5 m levels. Therefore, a relative rise in sea-level in this middle-upper section of the Itararé Subgroup is recognizable, and may correlate with glacial retreat. The palynological assemblage is datable as very Late Carboniferous based on previous records of selected miospore species.
