We investigate in detail the waiting-time solutions of nonlineardiffusion equations of the form ∂th = ∂x(h ͫ ∂xh)(m > 0). Tothis purpose we obtain the numerical solutions for different valuesof the nonlinearity parameter m and for initial conditions of theform h(x,0) α xαq (q = 2/m). If α ≥ l the solutions have awaiting-time tw = tw(m,α), i.e. a finite time interval in whichthe front is at rest before starting to move. In previous works westudied in detail the cases m = 3, corresponding to viscous gravitycurrents, and m = l, that describe isothermal gaseous percolationthrough a porous medium and flow in unconfined aquifers. Herewe investigate the (numerical) waiting-time solutions for 1/2 ≤m ≤ 9. The solutions are shown in detail and the m and αdependence of the waiting time as well as other properties arestudied. The behaviour of the solutions is qualitatively the samefor all m, but they differ quantitatively as well as in many details. We determine tw and the start-up velocity ^c as functions of m and α. We find that the values of T (m,α) = (tw¹´ͫ - t1¹´ͫ)/(t͚¹´ͫ - t1¹´ͫ) y C(m,α) = (^Cw¹´ͫ - ^C1¹´ͫ)/(^C͚¹´ͫ -^C1¹´ͫ) for the abovementioned range of m fall with good approximation on singleuniversal empirical curves (here t1, t͚, ^c1, and ^C͚ are given byknown formulae). We make a detailed study of the growth andevolution of the corner layer (the small interval Δx in which hxvaries strongly). We also investigate the intermediate asymptoticsclose to the front and near start-up. We detect two self-similarregimes: the first one appears in a domain close to the cornerlayer that is arriving at the front and the other occurs in a domainbehind the corner layer but a little further from it than the firstone. The first regime approaches a constant velocity travelingwave, while the second one belongs to a different type of self-similarity. Fil: Perazzo, Carlos Alberto. Universidad de Buenos Aires.
