Hydride generation atomic absorption spectrophotometry method for the determination of arsenic at ultramicro levels

A simple and rapid hydride generation atomic absorption spectrophotometry (HG - AAS) for the determination of arsenic in samples at very low concentrations has been developed. The method is based on the reaction of NaBH4 with acidified sample and separation of analyte as hydride from the matrix befo...

The method is based on the reaction of NaBH4 with acidified sample and separation of analyte as hydride from the matrix before determination. The arsine was transported to the quartz T-tube heated at 900°C for detection. The concentrations of HF solution used in the preparation of the samples were carefully controlled to avoid the formation of fluoro-complexed ions. The correlation coefficient (r2) was 0.989. The limit of detection, (LOD), was calculated as 0.71 μg g-1. The sensitivity of the method was found to be 0.000024 μg L-1. The method was applied successfully for the determination of arsenic in slurries from different sources and was found to be effective in the range 0.0002-2.35 μg L-1. Of all the ions tested, no ion was found to have a significant interference effect on the accuracy of the method.
