Conversion of Goldstone bosons into gravitons in anisotropic cosmology

Sumario:The gravitational chiral anomaly makes possible the conversion of a Goldstone boson into a graviton in a background gravitational field. We show that the interaction Lagrangian for this process does not vanish if and only if the background metric has a nonvanishing Weyl tensor, i.e., if it is not conformally flat. No conversion takes place in an isotropic expanding universe. We evaluate the probability for the conversion of Goldstone bosons into gravitons in Bianchi type-I background metrics, the simplest anisotropic cosmological backgrounds. © 1990 The American Physical Society.
