Development of pollen grains in Forastero peach cultivar (Prunus persica Batsch)

Microsporogenesis, microgametogenesis and the morphology of mature pollen grains of the Forastero peach cultivar are described. This process started in winter, when the mean temperature was 5.6°C. Some aborted microspore mother cells were observed in the archesporium of anthers. Tapetal cells were b...

This process started in winter, when the mean temperature was 5.6°C. Some aborted microspore mother cells were observed in the archesporium of anthers. Tapetal cells were bi-nucleate and numerous micro vacuoles and oil droplets were present in their cytoplasm. Mature pollen grains were observed some days before anthesis, approximately one month later than the differentiation of microspores. Vegetative cell showed a dense cytoplasm with abundant lipids, proteins and some amyloplasts containing one or two starch grains. Mitochondria were present in a high proportion with two different structures, some of them with well developed cristae and other ones with little or without discernible cristae. The amount of pollen grains observed within mature anthers, was not uniform. Anthers with numerous pollen grains and other ones with few or without pollen grains were observed. A great amount of abnormal pollen grains were present in the 'Forastero' anthers, like pollen grains without pore regions and with different types of exine and columellae disposition. Fil:Radice, S.
