The affected animals often have a sudden death and their meats can be confiscated due to its poor quality. The halothane test has been the method to classify pigs into affected and non affected animals. This indirect test does not distinguish resistant homozygous animals from heterozygous carriers. Furthermore, it is imprecise because some pigs do not react as expected from their genotype. A point mutation (C for T) in the nucleotide 1843 of the cDNA from the ryanodine receptor gene accounts for the MH etiology. Therefore, a molecular test provides a more accurate method to determine genotypes. Thirty-five pigs from EEA-Inta Pergamino have been analysed by PCR/REA in order to discuss their genotypes for the ryr-1 gene. The results from the original halothane test and breedings were compared with those obtained from PCR/REA: we found 4 animals that did not present the expected genotype. Fil:Flawia, M.M.
