Neotectonic modification on the drainage pattern of the central Pampean region (Argentina): Consequences on the Salado basin infill

On the other hand, it provides indirect information that contributes to the better understanding of the tectosedimentary history of the Chacoparanaense and the Pampas Plains overlying Paleozoic and Mesozoic basins. This Andean tectonics controls the hydrogra-phic drainage design pattern. In consequence, the main collectors of the region must be modified to facilitate runoff in the Andean piedmont towards the base level of the Atlantic Ocean. The Mar Chiquita lagoon is the result of the embalming produced by the interposition of a relief generated by the neotectonic interaction of the Córdoba alluvial fan with the uprising of Alto San Guillermo. In this way, the runoff of a segment of the Andean orogenic front centered in the Tucumán province has interrupted the Modern transport of siliciclastic materials to the Salado basin by the possible joint action of: 1) the embalming produced by the Córdoba alluvial fan, 2) the capture of the Carcarañá river and, 3) the presence of a huge eolian field on the peneplanized region that currently separates them. © 2018 Sociedad Geologica de Espana.
