In the first part the variation of the detector efficiency for a point source as a function of source position is measured. It is seen that the angular dependence is particularly important. With this response function known, a semi empirical model is developed for the computation of the efficiency in cases of extensive radiation fields. Measurements are carried out which show the adequacy of the model. The method is suitable for liquid samples such as drinkable water, industrial waste liquids and sewage liquids.
