A rapid turbidimetric method for the determination of the precipitation curves of carrageenans

A rapid turbidimetric method for the determination of the precipitation curve of carrageenans is proposed. It is based on the precipitation of a solution of carrageenan, under standard conditions, at a given concentration of potassium chloride and the measurement of the turbidity produced. The preci...

It is based on the precipitation of a solution of carrageenan, under standard conditions, at a given concentration of potassium chloride and the measurement of the turbidity produced. The precipitation curves of five samples of carrageenans from Chondrus crispus, Gigartina skottsbergii and Iridea undulosa were determined. The results show that the method can be used to characterise the sample and (qualitatively) the distribution of the molecules; and so, to determine its commerical value.
