Palaeomagnetic evidence for relations between sedimentation and deformation. The Sierras Australes is a curved orogenic fold and thrust belt with a northwest-southeast strike, exposed in the south western part of Buenos Aires province (Argentina). Implications of recent palaeomagnetic results on these rocks are analysed. The Tunas Formation is of broad area extent and is the youngest unit of the Carboniferous-Permian Pillahuincó Group. The palaeoflora and palaeofauna indicate a Permian age for these rocks. Recent palaeomagnetic data indicate that the Tunas Formation acquired its magnetization during as well as before folding. Whereas syntectonic magnetizations are confined to the area of the Sierra de las Tunas (northeast), pretectonic magnetizations were found in the Sierra de Pillahuincó (southeast). The syntectonic poles have been grouped into a mean Tunas palaeomagnetic pole. This pole corresponds to the Early Permian section of the South America APWP, and indicates that a fold of the Sierras Australes occurred until those times, very soon after or practically contemporaneously with deposition of the Tunas sequence. The Early Permian deformation may represent the activity of the San Rafaelic orogenic phase in the region. Pretectonic magnetization isolated in the Sierra de Pillahuincó, yielded the Pillahuincó palaeomagnetic pole. This pole corresponds to the late Early Permian section of the South American APWP. These younger and different magnetizations indicate the migration of the orogenic front towards the east-northeast, with a gradual attenuation of the deformation through time. © 1999 Asociación Geológica Argentina. 1999 https://bibliotecadigital.exactas.uba.ar/collection/paper/document/paper_00044822_v54_n3_p220_Tomezzoli http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12110/paper_00044822_v54_n3_p220_Tomezzoli
