Recovering contributions from historiography and other social sciences, it reflects on the different elements that have traditionally been considered as “constituents of our identity.” The article seeks to question notions assumed uncritically, highlight the importance of the historical dimension for understanding long-term processes, and contribute to the analysis of some current problems, particularly those related to the present configuration of our region. While maintaining a reflective approach, it draws on and analyzes primary sources through a qualitative methodology, especially historical documents and works by recognized social scientists. En el presente trabajo se aborda una problemática relativamente novedosa para el campo de las relaciones internacionales: la identidad de América Latina. Recuperando aportes de la historiografía y otras ciencias sociales se reflexiona en torno a los distintos elementos que tradicionalmente han sido recuperados como ´constitutivos de nuestra identidad´. El artículo trata así de cuestionar nociones asumidas de forma acrítica, recuperar la importancia de la dimensión histórica para comprender procesos de larga duración y contribuir al análisis de algunos problemas de nuestro presente vinculados en especial con la configuración actual de nuestra región. Si bien el artículo mantiene un enfoque reflexivo se recuperan y analizan desde una metodología cualitativa fuentes primarias, en especial documentos de época junto con obras de cientistas sociales reconocidos.
