A Handbook for Conservator-restorers es un libro que surge como resultado del sexto proyecto europeo EU-ARTECH (Access Research and Technology for the Conservation of the European Cultural Heritage). En otras palabras, es la consecuencia de un extenso diálogo entre conservadores y científicos de la conservación. Han existido muchos compendios de técnicas analíticas aplicadas a la conservación de bienes culturales. La gran mayoría posee un tratamiento de la información muy complejo, que solamente un estrecho espectro de gente especializada (científicos de la conservación) puede interpretarla y aplicarla directamente en el campo de esta disciplina. Esto ocasiona una brecha práctico-conceptual entre ambas partes, e irrumpe fuertemente en el tan buscado diálogo. De esta manera, pierden protagonismo la curiosidad y el enriquecimiento de la investigación. En definitiva, se compromete lo que realmente importa en esta disciplina que es la generación de preguntas. Por consiguiente, existe el riesgo que uno se quede parado de un lado del río con su respuesta sin tener la oportunidad de escuchar múltiples voces de varios lugares y en consecuencia poder aproximarnos lo más posible a aquello que todos, sin guardar cuidado, llamamos verdad.
