Sumario:The explicit teaching of academic writing at university is essential to ensure students’ academic literacy, a crucial aspect of their professional and academic development. This paper examines the importance of explicitly teaching the conventions and discourse genres within university disciplines, highlighting how these practices enhance both linguistic competence and the construction of disciplinary knowledge. It is argued that university students do not necessarily possess the writing skills required to engage in the discursive communities of their disciplines. Therefore, the explicit teaching of academic genres contributes not only to the improvement of writing skills but also to access to the knowledge and practices specific to each field of study. Academic literacy should be understood as a continuous and contextualized process, requiring pedagogical intervention in the classroom to support students in their development as specialized writers.
