The results of the initial diagnostic test indicate that, although students show strengths in locating information, they face significant challenges in inferential and critical reading comprehension. In the area of writing, the main difficulties are detected in cohesion, coherence, punctuation, and spelling. The study complements these findings with teachers' perceptions of these weaknesses and concludes with specific suggestions for strengthening training in these areas, including the ethical use of Artificial Intelligence, academic literacy, multimodal literacy, and consideration of the institutional and teachers' role in the ongoing development of these skills. El presente trabajo analiza las habilidades de lectura y escritura de 231 estudiantes de primer ingreso de la Universidad Tecnológica del Uruguay (UTEC) en 2025, a partir del informe diagnóstico del Centro de Escritura Académica del Programa de Lenguas. Los resultados de la prueba diagnóstica inicial indican que, si bien los estudiantes muestran fortalezas en la localización de información, enfrentan desafíos significativos en la comprensión lectora inferencial y crítica. En el ámbito de la escritura, las principales dificultades se detectan en cohesión, coherencia, puntuación y ortografía. El estudio complementa estos hallazgos con las percepciones docentes sobre dichas debilidades y concluye con sugerencias concretas para fortalecer la formación, incluyendo el uso ético de la Inteligencia Artificial, la alfabetización académica, la alfabetización multimodal y la consideración del rol institucional y de los docentes en el desarrollo permanente de estas habilidades.
