Effect of sun protection on the energy requirement for thermal environmental conditioning of houses in very warm climates and with high radiation indices

A case study of state-produced housing in the Argentinian northeastern is presented, with the objective of evaluating differentsolar protection strategies, and their effects on indoor environmental conditions, and consequently on the need for energy forair conditioning. Through dynamic simulations w...

Through dynamic simulations with Energy Plus, the ranges of reduction in electrical consumption associatedwith the use of different solar protection resources in homes, incold and warm periods, were quantified. The exterior protectionalternatives analyzed were applied to walls, ceilings and glasssurfaces of the homes. Solar protection on roofs (through roofoverlays or “shade roofs”) was the situation that generated themost possibilities of reducing the cooling load, not being a common situation in regional construction practice.
