Strelitzia nicolai Regel & Körn., the tallest species in the genus, is part of the living collection at the Botanical Garden and Arboretum on the main grounds of the Argentine Museum of Natural Sciences “Bernardino Rivadavia” (MACN), where it surpasses 6 meters height. Based on bibliographic documentation and species identification, we confirmed that the plant was originally gifted in 1880 to the Argentine naturalist Eduardo L. Holmberg (1852-1937) by his colleague, the German scientist Ricardo Napp, in 1880. Holmberg cultivated this Strelitzia at his home in downtown Buenos Aires, and after his death in 1937, his family donated the plant to the MACN, allowing it to continue thriving in the museum’s gardens, where it still blooms today. Las especies del género Strelitzia (Strelitziaceae) son originarias del sudeste de África y se caracterizan por sus enormes inflorescencias cuyas flores y espata recuerdan la cabeza de un ave. Strelitzia nicolaii Regel y Körn., la especie de mayor altura del género, forma parte de la colección viva del Jardín Botánico y Arboretum en el predio principal del Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales "Bernardino Rivadavia" (MACN), donde alcanza más de 6 m. Sobre la base de documentación bibliográfica e identificación de la especie, se pudo corroborar que la planta fue originalmente obsequiada al naturalista argentino Eduardo L. Holmberg (1852-1937) por su colega, el científico alemán Ricardo Napp en 1880. Holmberg cultivó esta Strelizia en su hogar ubicado en el centro de la ciudad de Buenos Aires y tras su fallecimiento (acontecido en 1937) la familia donó la planta al MACN para que continúe viviendo en los jardines del Museo, donde continúa floreciendo hasta hoy. Pocos saben que las strelitzias que adornan los jardines son parte de este legado histórico.
