Monthly mean discharge data from six gauging stations were used to identify cases where the monthly mean discharge was below the 5th percentile (P05) or above the 95th percentile (P95), defining the extremes based on the “peaks over threshold” criterion. These extremes were classified by their geographical extent as localized, intermediate, and generalized extremes. Using monthly precipitation data from the ERA5 Reanalysis, anomaly fields were calculated, and similar patterns were grouped with the k-means algorithm. Four precipitation patterns were identified for localized extremes, three for intermediate extremes, and two for generalized extremes. Discharges below P05 are associated with negative precipitation anomalies, while discharges above P95 are linked to positive anomalies. However, this relationship is not linear due to local factors.
