Welfare provision to ani-mals is a human responsibility that must consider different aspects such as adequate housing, management, nutrition, prevention and treatment of diseases. The objective of this review was to gather information regarding the evolution of cattle fattening systems and the effects of intensification on animal welfare and meat production. En Argentina los siste-mas de producción de carne se encuentran frente al desafío de intensificar los procesos para responder a la demanda mundial de proteínas de origen animal. Además de incrementar la producción, es indiscutible la consideración del bienestar animal durante la etapa de producción primaria. Brindar bienestar a los animales es una responsabilidad humana que debe considerar diferentes aspectos como alojamiento adecuado, manejo, nutrición, prevención y tratamiento de enfermedades. El objetivo de la presente actualización fue reunir información respecto de la evolución ocurrida en los sistemas de en-gorde de bovinos y de los efectos de la intensificación sobre el bienestar animal y la producción de carne.
