They only can prove the existence of a doctrine of transmigration in ancient Pythagoreanism, but they do not enable us to reconstruct its characteristics. After discussing the rapport of soul-body dualism with metempsychosis, it is considered –on the basis of analogies with some views of Alcmeon and Empedocles- the hypothesis that the subject of transmigration constitutes a trascendental and transempirical self, diverse from the “natural soul” which has psychical attributes and, depending upon the body, diez when it diez.
