Nagy, Mariano Indigenous People Catriel Indian friends Submission Confinement Pueblos indígenas Catriel Indios amigos Sometimiento Confinamiento Povos indígenas Catriel Índios amigos Subjugação Confinamento The following paper discusses the course of Catriel’s people and their relationship with the Argentine government during the second half of the 19th century, especially between 1878 and 1886, when its leaders and some of their people were detained in the island Martín García.Based on analysis of documents from the Archivo General de la Armada (AGA), the article attempts to analyze changes and continuities, especially the (in)feasibility of the status of ‘Indian friends’ as the Argentine nation state was consolidated, and whether these strategies could be replicated in the spaces where catrieleros were arrested, either by decision of the military or the indigenous people themselves, without losing sight of the context of subjugation and confinement imposed on the aborigines by the government. El siguiente trabajo aborda el derrotero de la gente de Catriel y la relación con el gobierno argentino en la segunda mitad del siglo xix, especialmente entre 1878 y 1886, período en el cual sus líderes y parte de su gente fueron recluidos en la isla Martín García.A partir de documentación proveniente del Archivo General de la Armada (AGA) se intentan analizar los cambios y continuidades, en especial la (in)viabilidad del estatus de indios amigos conforme el Estado-Nación argentino se consolidaba, y si esas estrategias pudieron reproducirse en los espacios donde los catrieleros fueron detenidos, ya sea por decisión de los militares o de los propios indígenas, sin perder de vista el contexto de sometimiento y confinamiento impuesto a los aborígenes por parte del gobierno. O artigo aborda o percurso das pessoas de Catriel e a relação com o governo argentino na segunda metade do século XIX, especialmente entre 1878 e 1886, momento durante o qual seus líderes e algumas pessoas de lá foram detidas na ilha Martín García .A partir dos documentos do Archivo General de la Armada (AGA) tentam-se analisar as mudanças e continuidades, especialmente a (in)viabilidade do estatuto de índios amigos conforme ao processo de consolidaçao do Estado-nação argentino, e ver se estas estratégias poderiam ser replicadas nos espaços onde os catrieleros foram presos; seja por decisão dos militares ou as próprias pessoas, sem perder de vista o contexto de subjugação e confinamento imposto pelo governo à população indígena.
