Thus, built environment (BE) interventions are one of the key elements for the planning of more walkable cities and communities for the elderly, ensuring them more independence to reach priority destinations in order to maintain a better quality of life. This paper presents a systematic review of 41 studies published between 2000 and 2020 that assessed the influence of the BE on walking among the elderly, considering different trip purposes and geographic contexts as well as relationships between objective and subjective BE measures. The results found allowed to identify nine BE variables related to walking for different trip purposes. The non-linear effects of some of those variables are dependent on the geographic context. However, only three articles were concerned to investigate relationships between objective BE measures and their perception by the elderly. It is important to notice the scarce number of studies from developing countries, in which a better understanding of the walking contexts depends on the inclusion of the elderly for the assessment of objective and subjective BE measures. O envelhecimento populacional é uma tendência demográfica global. Neste contexto, a adoção da caminhada para a prática de atividade física regular é de fundamental importância para o envelhecimento ativo da população. Assim, intervenções no ambiente construído (AC) são um dos elementos-chaves para o planejamento de cidades mais caminháveis para os idosos, assegurando-lhes maior independência nos deslocamentos aos destinos prioritários para a manutenção de uma melhor qualidade de vida. Este artigo apresenta uma revisão sistemática de 41 estudos publicados entre 2000 e 2020 que analisaram a influência do AC na caminhada entre os idosos, considerando diferentes motivos de viagem e contextos geográficos, e a relação entre medidas objetivas e subjetivas do AC. Os resultados obtidos permitiram identificar nove variáveis do AC positivamente associadas à caminhada para diferentes motivos de viagem. Os efeitos de algumas dessas variáveis são não lineares e dependentes do contexto geográfico. Contudo, apenas três artigos preocuparam-se em relacionar as medidas objetivas do AC às percepções dos idosos acerca dessas características. Chama-se a atenção para a escassez de estudos em países em desenvolvimento, onde um melhor entendimento dos contextos de caminhada depende da maior inclusão dos idosos para qualificar e perceber as medidas objetivas e subjetivas do AC.
