Despite its numerous crises throughout history, the capitalist system manages to reinvent itself in various ways. For much of the 20th century, capitalism developed based on industrial production. Following the crisis of the 1970s, transformations took place that restructured the system, with one of the main changes being the role of information and knowledge. In this regard, a group of authors has defined the current period as informational capitalism in the platform phase. After the financial crisis of 2008, there was a great push for innovation and the business model driven by platforms, promoting much simpler access to the internet and through our smartphones. We want to delve into the changes occurring in the current technical-scientific-informational environment. For this reason, we will observe the transformations in the material infrastructure of the internet worldwide. The article will be structured as follows: first, we will emphasize the definition of the current period; second, we will deepen the spatial perspective from which we start; third, we will analyze the collected data; and finally, we will present the final reflections. A pesar de su gran cantidad de crisis a lo largo de la historia, el sistema capitalista logra reinventarse de diversas formas. Durante gran parte del siglo XX, el capitalismo se ha desarrollado sobre la base de la producción industrial. A partir de la crisis de la década de 1970, se llevaron a cabo transformaciones que reestructuraron el sistema; una de las principales ha sido el rol central que adquirieron la información y el conocimiento. En este sentido, un grupo de autores ha definido el periodo actual como capitalismo informacional en fase de plataformas. Luego de la crisis financiera de 2008, se produjo un gran impulso a la innovación y al modelo de negocios impulsado por las plataformas, promoviendo un acceso mucho más simple a internet, incluso desde los teléfonos inteligentes (smartphones). En este trabajo, buscamos profundizar sobre los cambios que se producen en el medio técnico-científico-informacional en la actualidad. Por esta razón, observaremos cuáles son las transformaciones en la infraestructura material de internet a escala global. El artículo estará estructurado de la siguiente forma: en primer lugar, haremos hincapié en la definición del periodo actual; luego, profundizaremos en la perspectiva espacial que adoptamos; en tercer lugar, analizaremos los datos recabados; y, por último, presentaremos las reflexiones finales.
