River Plate Viceroyalty officials in charge of the above-mentioned explorations registered their impressions in travel diaries that are thoroughly analyzed in order to discover the ways this landscape of north Patagoniawas symbolically constructed. We think this mestizo landscape was the result of struggles maintained between Hispanic-Creoles and natives searching to convey meaning to the territory. Moreover, we state that in this context, the actors who served as interpreters developed a key role in the territorial configuration, given the ambiguity of their position as intermediaries of interethnic relations. intermediaries of interethnic relations. A fines del siglo XVIII la Corona española envió expedicionarios a reconocer el norte de la Patagonia, un territorio dominado por grupos indígenas pero de importancia estratégica para los hispanocriollos. Los funcionarios del Virreinato del Río de la Plata que llevaron a cabo dichas exploraciones registraron sus impresiones en diarios de viaje que analizamos con el objetivo de examinar los modos en que el paisajenorpatagónico fue construido simbólicamente. Consideramos que dicho paisaje se constituyó en base a las luchas desplegadas tanto por hispanocriollos como por indígenas buscando dar sentido al territorio. Sostenemos que, en este contexto, los personajes que se desempeñaban como intérpretes ejercían un rol fundamental en la configuración del territorio, dada la ambigüedad de su posición de intermediarios en lasrelaciones interétnicas.
