The dispute reveals the extent of the tensions generated by the exercise of power in the Church and by the confrontation between differing eccesiological conceptions. From this perspective, a dispute in which all that is apparently debated are questions concerning church ceremonial unveils itself to us in its full sifnificance: it reveals the Ecclesiatical Cabildo´s tendency towards autonomy in the face of episcopal prerogative. Such a tendency constitutes one of the many elements of conflict latent in a colonial diocese, which during the Eighteenth Century aquired increased relevance as the Metropolis slipped towards ruin, and it may furthermore be considered an anticipation of the political-religious ferment which would manifest itself in 1810.  Este artículo analiza un conflicto por los usos litúrgicos vigentes en la catedral de Buenos Aires que enfrentó al obispo y a su cabildo en 1782. El pleito revela el alcance de las tensiones generadas por el ejercicio del poder en la Iglesia y por la confrontación entre distintas concepciones eclesiológicas. En esta perspectiva, una disputa en la que aparentemente solo se debaten cuestiones de ceremonial se nos revela en su cabal significación: pone al descubierto la tendencia a la autonomía del cabildo eclesiástico frente a las prerrogativas episcopales. Tal tendencia constituye uno de los muchos elementos de conflictualidad latentes en una diócesis colonial que, en la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII, adquiere mayor relevancia mientras la metrópolis se desliza hacia su ruina, y puede considerarse primicia de los fermentos político-religiosos que se manifestarán a partir de 1810.  Este artigo analisa um conflito sobre as práticas litúrgicas vigentes na Catedral de Buenos Aires, que opôs o bispo e seu cabido em 1782. A disputa revela a extensão das tensões geradas pelo exercício do poder na Igreja e pelo confronto entre diferentes concepções eclesiológicas. Nessa perspectiva, uma disputa que aparentemente debatia apenas questões cerimoniais revela todo o seu significado: expõe a tendência à autonomia do cabido eclesiástico diante das prerrogativas episcopais. Essa tendência constitui um dos muitos elementos de conflito latente em uma diocese colonial que, na segunda metade do século XVIII, adquiriu maior relevância à medida que a metrópole se encaminhava para a ruína.
