For this purpose, it seeks to link this work –one of the first in Argentina which wanted to initiate the historical reappraisal of the caudillos-, with the personal letters and several author’s manuscripts, as well as other publications from the same period, in order to move ahead in building a history of historiography not only concerned about a work’s internal analysis, but also particularly attentive to its contexts of production, links and influences between historians, and the expected or achieved public reception of their work. A través de la variada y poco conocida documentación existente en los archivos personales de David Peña (1862-1930), este artículo procura arrojar nueva luz sobre su Juan Facundo Quiroga (1906). Para ello, se busca poner en relación esta obra –una de las primeras en iniciar en el país la revisión histórica del caudillismo--, con el epistolario y diversos manuscritos de su autor, así como con otras publicaciones de la época, a fin de avanzar en la construcción de una historia de la historiografía no sólo interesada en el análisis interno de una obra, sino también particularmente atenta a indagar los contextos de producción, los vínculos e influencias entre historiadores y la recepción esperada o conseguida.
