The research is focused on the catholic periodical La América del Sud (1876-1880), which may be considered as one the main catholic organs of this period. The aforementioned topic is approached taking three issues into consideration: in the first place, the problematic of the catholic views regarding science is analyzed in the context of the contemporary disputes between catholics and anticlericals; secondly, these debates are inscribed in the larger picture conformed by the confrontations that were taking place in Europe and the United States over the character of the relation between religion and science; finally, the convergence –or divergence- between the ideas expressed by La América del Sud and those expressed by the Archbishopric of Buenos Aires is observed. Este artículo analiza la construcción de un discurso sobre la ciencia por parte de diversos actores católicos en la Argentina de la década de 1870. La indagación está centrada en el periódico católico La América del Sud (1876-1880), que puede ser considerado uno de los voceros más importantes del catolicismo en el período. El tema es abordado prestando atención a las siguientes tres cuestiones: en primer lugar, se estudia la problemática del acercamiento católico a la ciencia en el marco de las disputas contemporáneas entre católicos y anticlericales; en segundo lugar, se intenta ubicar los debates en el contexto de las pugnas que, en esos mismos años, se libraban en Europa y Estados Unidos con respecto al carácter del vínculo entre la ciencia y a religión; por último, se observa la relación entre las ideas expresadas por La América del Sud y aquellas expresadas por la Curia de Buenos Aires.
