Then it proposes to understand the tension between Nature and Free Will in the theology of the First Discourse on the Martyrs, an encomium on Martyrs written by an anonymous author belonging to the Church of the East. In particular, we will argue that this theology was a direct response to dualistic cosmologies that understood the impulse towards martyrdom as the result of an absolute opposition to the material world. Este trabajo se propone dos objetivos. En primer lugar, analizar el uso de la metáfora eclesiológica de las piedras y el templo en el contexto de la teología simbólica de la tradición cristiana siríaca. En segundo lugar, y a partir de ese primer análisis, nos proponemos entender la tensión entre naturaleza, voluntad y libre albedrío en la teología martirial del Primer discurso sobre los mártires, un encomio dedicado a los mártires de la iglesia sasánida escrito por un autor anónimo perteneciente a la Iglesia del Oriente. En concreto, sostendremos que esa teología era una respuesta a las cosmologías dualistas que entendían el impulso hacia el martirio como el resultado de un rechazo absoluto del mundo material.
