"Rising levels of electronic waste, low collection rates, and inappropriate disposal and treatment of waste electrical and electronic equipment\n(WEEE) pose significant risks to the environment and human health. While the number of countries that have adopted national e-waste policy, legislation or regulation has increased, progress in some regions is slow, enforcement is poor, and policies or regulations are almost non-existent or ineffective. At the regional level, Argentina is among the three Latin American countries with the highest generation of WEEE, only behind Brazil and Mexico. Added to this, there is no adequate management system for this type of waste in the territory and for several years regulations on the matter have been discussed without any significant result. Collection or proper management is not encouraged, the Extended Producer Responsibility is not properly regulated and there is a lack of investment in the treatment of products that shows an absent political motivation in the matter. Too often WEEE ends up in landfills, open dumps, or incinerated and the reality is that the electronics industry is growing while recycling systems are lagging behind. The objective of this work is to analyze the current WEEE regime in Argentina, both in terms of national and international standards."

"Los crecientes niveles de desechos electrónicos, las bajas tasas de recolección y la eliminación y el tratamiento no adecuado de los residuos de aparatos eléctricos y electrónicos (RAEE) representan riesgos significativos para el ambiente y la salud humana. Si bien se ha incrementado el número de países que han adoptado una política, legislación o reglamentación nacional sobre desechos electrónicos, los avances en algunas regiones son lentos, la aplicación es deficiente y las políticas o reglamentaciones son casi inexistentes o ineficaces. A nivel regional, Argentina se ubica entre los tres países de América Latina con mayor generación de RAEE, solo detrás de Brasil y México. Agregado a ello, no existe un sistema de gestión adecuado de esta clase de residuos en el territorio y desde hace varios años que se está debatiendo normativa al respecto sin grandes resultados. Tampoco se incentiva la recolección o la gestión adecuada, la responsabilidad de los productores no se encuentra debidamente reglamentada y hay una falta de inversión en el tratamiento de productos que demuestra ausencia de motivación política en el tema. Con demasiada frecuencia los RAEE terminan en rellenos sanitarios, basurales a cielo abierto, o incinerados y la realidad es que la industria de consumo de electrónicos aumenta mientras que los sistemas de reciclaje se quedan atrás.
