description This article begins with brief reflections on rock art and its conservation. It refers to the legal framework concerning cultural heritage and rock art site conservation in Bolivia. The latest version of the Constitution of the Plurinational State of Bolivia —in contrast to the former constitution— defines collective ownership and postulates the general society as responsible for the conservation and preservation of the Bolivian cultural heritage, with the State acting as supervisor. The Bolivian Rock Art Research Society (SIARB) has worked in the last 30 years in the conservation of rock art sites, after having defined the institutional protocol for rock art conservation and research. The SIARB has established a corporative model for its activities involving: preventive conservation, specific conservation, measures and management of sites, including consultation and agreements between experts and different stakeholders such as municipal governments and communities, official permission for the works to be carried out, archaeological and ethnohistorical research, analysis of conservation status and basic treatment, development of sites with adequate infrastructure for visitation, education campaigns, and training workshops for tourist guides, rules for administration and a management plan that includes monitoring conservation conditions. Finally, this article mentions the activities carried out by different institutions that made interventions in rock art sites with neither technical nor scientific basis, whose results have been detrimental for the conservation of rock art.

El artículo comienza con consideraciones sobre el arte rupestre y su conservación. Luego se realiza un abordaje al marco legal que establece las pautas de gestión y la conservación del arte rupestre en Bolivia, donde se analiza la última Constitución Política del Estado Plurinacional de Bolivia, que, en contraste con la anterior constitución, establece su propiedad colectiva y empodera a la sociedad en general como dueña y responsable de la conservación y preservación del Patrimonio Cultural Boliviano teniendo como rector al Estado. Posteriormente se presenta la labor de la Sociedad de Investigación del Arte Rupestre de Bolivia (SIARB) en la conservación del arte rupestre durante los últimos 30 años, desde sus inicios hasta lograr protocolos institucionalizados para su conservación e investigación. Se presenta el modelo desarrollado por la SIARB, para la Conservación Preventiva, Curativa y Gestión del arte rupestre que involucra: concertación entre los Gobiernos Municipales y las comunidades originarias, permisos correspondientes, investigación arqueológica y etnohistórica, el diagnóstico de conservación y tratamientos básicos, el desarrollo de los sitios con una infraestructura adecuada para las visitas, talleres de concientización para autoridades y público en general, talleres de capacitación para “guardaruinas” y guías turísticos, reglamentos de gestión y administración y un plan de manejo a corto y mediano plazo, que incluye el monitoreo de conservación.
