Positions of Otto von Gierke, the Carlyles, Ernst Kantorowicz, Walter Ullmann, Alois Dempf and Georges de Lagarde are shortly considered. Finally, two major figures of the 14th century, Marsilius of Padua and William of Ockham, are shown in the conflicting views of modern interpretation.
