El pasaje de Mt 16, 13-19 fue utilizado luego de la Reforma Gregoriana para apoyar la supremacía papal sobre la Iglesia. Sin embargo, la exégesis pre-gregoriana de estos versos no es necesariamente a favor del papa, sino una de tipo conciliar.
