To reach that, first of all, the author examines the essay of 1916 and the way the concepts of novel and form are there studied; secondly, he compares the critique of the genre with the Lukácsian literary analyses in the twenties and thirties. Finally, the article contrasts the aesthetics of The Theory of the Novel with his late theoretical work.
