This article argues that one of his motivations for resigning was the lack of money and his government’s incapacity to raise funds. The limits of his tax-raising powers was not only due to his dispute with Mexico’s first Constituent Congress, but also the rupture of the legitimacy of taxation itself and the dispersion of public authority between the provincial governments. In fact, Imperial government could only count on moderately effective authority in Mexico City and its surroundings. As a consequence, the fiscal burden of sustaining central government fell almost exclusively on the capital’s population. This characteristic of Mexico’s fiscal system would not be reversed until well into the twenty century. Las razones que llevaron al emperador Agustín de Iturbide a abdicar al trono mexicano aún no son del todo claras. En este artículo se argumenta que uno de los motivos que lo convencieron de renunciar fue la escasez de dinero y la incapacidad de su gobierno para recaudarlo. Los límites a su potestad recaudatoria obedecían a la fragmentación de la estructura hacendaria de antiguo régimen, a la disminución de la capacidad tributaria de las élites, a la ruptura de la legitimidad fiscal, así como a la dispersión del poder público entre los gobiernos provinciales y entre los poderes Legislativo y Ejecutivo. De hecho, el gobierno imperial sólo ejerció una autoridad medianamente efectiva en la Ciudad de México y sus alrededores. En consecuencia, la carga fiscal para el sostenimiento del gobierno central recayó casi exclusivamente en los habitantes de la capital del país.
