Initially it reviews –based on the available statistical information– changes in the allocation of land between agriculture and livestock and within agriculture itself. Among the causal factors of such territorial dynamics are analyzed: the several rate of profitability –associated with the price/cost system and the various interventions implemented in the last decades– of these activities; the technological changes that affected both the relative returns and the possibility of widening the territorial border itself; and the modifications related with the global change climate. The paper concludes that in addition to an expansion in the total area used, a displacement of livestock by agriculture is verified and within this a greater pre-eminence of annual crops closely related to the dynamics of international markets. El objetivo del trabajo es analizar las causales del proceso de reasignación territorial entre distintas actividades que tienen como epicentro el uso de la tierra. Inicialmente se pasa revista –en base a la información estadística disponible– a los cambios de asignación de la tierra entre agro y ganadería y al interior de la propia agricultura. Entre los factores causales de tales dinámicas territoriales se analizan: las distintas rentabilidades –asociadas al sistema de precios/costos y a las diversas intervenciones implementadas en las últimas décadas– de las actividades; los cambios tecnológicos que afectaron tanto la rentabilidades relativas como la posibilidad de ensanchar la propia frontera territorial; y las modificaciones asociadas con el cambio climático.
