While the progress made by the regional integration process is emphasized, pending issues are highlighted, not only as challenges but also as MERCOSUR's potentialities, focusing on enabling the countries that comprise it to be able to jointly and coordinate towards sustainable development. Thus, we think that beyond the criticism that may be made of the regional agreement, we must focus on the MERCOSUR that we have, and project the regional future based on it. Tras 30 años de vida del MERCOSUR, el presente artículo propone un breve recorrido por su historia, haciendo hincapié en la situación regional e internacional que atraviesa el bloque, destacando algunas cuestiones significativas de la agenda intergubernamental, tales como el Acuerdo MERCOSUR-UE, el tema del arancel externo común y el impacto de la pandemia del COVID-19. Si bien se enfatizan los avances logrados por el proceso de integración regional, se pone de relieve aquellas cuestiones pendientes, no sólo como desafíos, sino también, como potencialidades del bloque, con miras a que los países que lo componen puedan encaminarse de manera conjunta y coordinada hacia el desarrollo sostenible.
