The period of analysis covers the nineteenth century until 1973, when it is possible to identify three legal regimes: protection of national cabotage from 1813 to 1864; opening for external cabotage from 1864 to 1922; and again the return of protection to national cabotage from 1922 to 1973. This last period was added a new legal system in 1956 that guaranteed to Chilean shipowners 50% of all foreign trade. The trajectory of the naval sector is also analyzed within the structural changes of the Chilean economy that involves the transformation of an exporting mercantile export economy to an economy in process of industrialization commanded by the state. Este artículo tiene por objeto estudiar la trayectoria de la marina mercante y la construcción naval chilena a partir de su interacción con la economía política dentro de los regímenes jurídicos de protección y liberación de la navegación marítima. El período de análisis abarca desde siglo xix hasta 1973, donde es posible identificar tres regímenes jurídicos: protección al cabotaje nacional de 1813 a 1864; apertura para cabotaje exterior de 1864 a 1922; y nuevamente el retorno de la protección al cabotaje nacional de 1922 a 1973. Este último período se añadió a un nuevo ordenamiento jurídico en 1956 que garantizaba a los armadores chilenos el 50% de todo comercio exterior.
