description John Poinsot (John of St. Thomas) (1589-1644) is one of the most prominent thinkers of the so-called late scholasticism. He became notable for his numerous writings, especially in the areas of Logic, Metaphysics, and Theology. In his time, probabilism was a prevailing doctrine in ecclesiastical circles, both in Europe and America. The topic was usually discussed within moral theology, particularly in matters related to the sacrament of penance and right conscience. However, what is proposed in this brief analysis is a logical-epistemic perspective on the opinio probabilis, based on the fundamental gnosiological notions of Poinsot's Ars Logica. Our aim in this exposition is to show that the probable opinion corresponds to a sui generis model of enunciation that presents significantly relevant semantic difficulties for the horizon of language meanings and the epistemic degrees of the notitia of the intentional object. In this context, the doctrine of the sign and relation emerges as indispensable requirements for an adequate approach to the subject, ultimately presented as an inductive model of formal consequence.

Se destacó por sus numerosos escritos, especialmente en las áreas de la lógica, la metafísica y la teología. En su tiempo, el probabilismo era una doctrina corriente en los círculos eclesiásticos, tanto en Europa como en América. Habitualmente, el tema se abordaba dentro de la teología moral, en particual en asuntos relacionados con el sacramento de la penitencia y la conciencia recta. Sin embargo, lo que se propone en este breve análisis es una mirada lógico-epistémica sobre la opinio probabilis, tomando como base las nociones gnoseológicas fundamentales del Ars Logica de Poinsot. Nuestro propósito en esta exposición es mostrar que la opinión probable corresponde a un modelo sui generis de enunciación que manifiesta dificultades semánticas notablemente relevantes para el horizonte de los significados del lenguaje y los grados epistémicos de la notitia del objeto intencional. En este sentido, la doctrina del signo y la relación emergen como requisitos indispensables para un adecuado abordaje del tema, presentado en última instancia como un modelo inductivo de consecuencia formal. Notabilizou-se por seus inúmeros escritos, especialmente nas áreas da lógica, da metafísica e da teologia. Em seu tempo, o probabilismo era doutrina corrente nos círculos eclesiásticos, tanto na Europa como na América. Usualmente, o tema era abordado dentro da teologia moral, particularmente no âmbito dos assuntos atinentes ao sacramento da penitência e da consciência reta. Porém, o que se propõe nesta breve análise é um olhar lógico-epistêmico acerca da opinio probabilis, tomando-se por base as noções gnosiológicas fundamentais da Ars Logica de Poinsot.
