Drawing on the theoretical framework developed by the New Institutional Economics, this line proposes the guilds as capitalist developers, focusing on their participation in the proto-industry. The core of its argument attributes to guild´s regulations the ability to reduce transaction costs related to the production and circulation of craft goods, suggesting an innovative and significant approach in current historiography. Therefore, our goal will be to make a critical approach to its theoretical basis and main theses. El objetivo de este trabajo consiste en realizar un análisis crítico del Return of the Guilds, corriente de estudios que ha irrumpido en el mundo académico en el último cuarto de siglo con el objeto de reexaminar el desempeño económico de los gremios medievales y modernos. Sirviéndose del arsenal teórico desarrollado por la Nueva Economía Institucional, esta perspectiva encuentra en las corporaciones de oficio un estímulo para el desarrollo capitalista. Particularmente, se destaca la participación de estas instituciones en la protoindustria, lo que supone un desafío a la historiografía tradicional sobre la cuestión. El núcleo del planteo radica en atribuir a la regulación gremial la capacidad de reducir los costos de transacción relativos a la producción y circulación de los bienes artesanales. Se trata de un enfoque novedoso y de gran importancia en la escena historiográfica actual.
