This paper proposes the concept of knowing how to speak, associated to a specific metalanguage of public speech that is concretized in formal oral genres, whose delimitation is seen as a possibility to know and reflect on oral linguistic practices with their own conceptual instruments, as well as to project the development of people’s discursive–textual capacity from articulating instances of oral textual production and metalinguistic thought. The class constitutes, from the speakers’ thought, a space for theorization due to the particular form that the dialogue between teachers and students assumes. La reflexividad del lenguaje es una propiedad común a las actividades de escritura y oralidad. Sin embargo, se relaciona de forma más recurrente con las prácticas de escritura. Este escrito propone el concepto saber de hablar, cuya delimitación se avizora como posibilidad para conocer y reflexionar acerca de las prácticas lingüísticas en géneros orales formales con instrumentos conceptuales propios, así como proyectar el desarrollo de la capacidad discursivo–textual de las personas a partir de articular instancias de producción textual oral y de reflexión metalingüística. La clase constituye, desde la reflexión de los hablantes, un espacio de teorización por la forma particular que asume el diálogo entre docentes y estudiantes.
