Thirty–eight agents and two spies who infiltrated organizations opposing the regime were interviewed at two different times: before and after the National Truth Commission. The aim here is to demonstrate the need to combine journalistic techniques with historians’ strategies to reveal aspects that these oral sources seek to keep secret. And to establish parameters for interpreting this data in order to understand —without justifying or accepting— facts, ideas and versions of the perpetrators’ accounts. Este artigo tem o objetivo de analisar entrevistas realizadas com agentes do Destacamento de Operações de Informações (DOI) de São Paulo e dos centros de informação militares, bem como os aspectos éticos e metodológicos sobre como lidar com as declarações de policiais e de militares que participaram de órgãos de segurança da ditadura militar brasileira entre 1964 e 1985. Foram ouvidos 38 agentes e dois espiões infiltrados em organizações de oposição ao regime em dois momentos: antes e depois da Comissão Nacional da Verdade. Pretende–se aqui demonstrar a necessidade de se mesclar técnicas jornalísticas às estratégias do historiador para desvelar aspectos que essas fontes orais procuram manter em segredo. E estabelecer parâmetros para a interpretação desses dados a fim de compreender —sem justificar ou aceitar— fatos, ideias e versões dos relatos dos perpetradores.
